Possible safeguards include configuring the platform to ensure all students get a mix of basic and challenging problems, or periodically overriding the AI to give struggling students more advanced tasks (as the teacher did). The system’s recommendations could be reviewed and tweaked to be more growth-oriented for everyone, perhaps by making its training data or rules more equitable.

  • Medium Risk – This situation could widen achievement gaps over time and demotivate the students who are held back by the AI’s limited recommendations. It’s a moderate risk: it affects learning outcomes and fairness, but the teacher can intervene (as was done) and no immediate harm occurs if caught in time. Continuous unchecked bias, however, would have significant academic consequences.
     

  • Decision: The school would choose to mitigate this risk by refining how the AI is used. Accepting the status quo would mean some students consistently get less opportunity, which conflicts with the school’s educational goals. To mitigate, the school might implement guidelines for teachers to regularly audit AI-driven assignments or adjust the algorithm’s settings. In this case, the teacher already took action by giving manual assignments – a practice that should be adopted as policy. Mitigation ensures a fairer learning experience, allowing every student the chance to be challenged and to improve, rather than letting the AI inadvertently track students into fixed levels.
